Utah’s oil-shale deposits are located in the Uinta Basin of northeastern Utah. The estimated in-ground resources are over 300 billion barrels of oil—some of the largest oil-shale resources in the world. Utah oil shale was deposited as organic-rich sediments in a freshwater lake (Lake Uinta) about 50 million years ago. About Oil Shale and Oil Sands Program The mission of the Clean and Secure Energy from Domestic Oil Shale and Oil Sands Resources Program at the University of Utah is to pursue research that improves industry's ability to utilize the vast energy stored in domestic oil shale and oil sands resources in a manner that minimizes environmental impact from production. North America’s first commercial oil-shale operation cleared perhaps its biggest hurdle when the federal government authorized a 14-mile corridor across public land in eastern Utah’s Uinta Basin to Oil Shale. Utah’s oil-shale deposits are located in the Uinta Basin of northeastern Utah. The estimated in-ground resources are over 300 billion barrels of oil—some of the largest oil-shale resources in the world. For decades many politicians and scientists have touted Utah’s oil shale as the energy of the future. Utah is home to the nation's most promising oil shale deposits that can yield as much as 77 billion barrels, much of it found in a rich "mahogany ledge" formed under large swaths of the Uinta Basin's southern rim.
